Do You Need a License or Certification to Become a Travel Advisor?

The short answer is: usually no. In most cases, you do not need a special license or certification to become a travel advisor.

However, there are three terms that often get confused: licensing, certification, and education.

Licensing refers to legal requirements. While travel advisors generally do not need a personal travel advisor license, some states require travel agencies to register as a Seller of Travel.

Currently, California, Florida, Hawaii, and Washington have Seller of Travel registration requirements. In California, Hawaii, and Washington, the agency is generally responsible for registration when it has advisors or clients in those states. Florida has additional requirements and currently requires individual travel advisors to obtain a Seller of Travel exemption waiver, which includes an application and fee, if they reside in Florida or sell travel to Florida residents.

In addition, Maryland passed Seller of Travel legislation on May 26, 2026. The program is still being developed, and details regarding registration requirements and who must comply have not yet been released.

Certification is voluntary. Certifications are earned through educational programs offered by industry organizations. They can demonstrate knowledge and professionalism but are not typically required to begin working as a travel advisor.

Educational Programs are how you learn the business. This includes understanding travel suppliers, booking processes, customer service, marketing, sales, and industry regulations. For most new advisors, training is the most important step because it provides the practical skills needed to succeed.

Many new advisors start with a host agency or travel agency that provides education, support, and industry resources.
